Our History
The Traditional Custodians of this land are the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.
The Wurundjeri take their name from the Woiwurrung language word, ‘Wurun’, meaning manna gum; their language is Woi Wurrung. They believe ancestral spirits created the world during the Dreamtime. The rich culture has a strong connection to the land and spirit world, with eleven language families.
500 Bourke occupies a place that was favoured for inter-clan gatherings and ceremonies that celebrated their connection to the land and its native flora and fauna. During Colonial times, the area was developed as a place for law, banking and business, and is anchored by significant historical buildings.
Today, 500 Bourke is a genuine community providing opportunities for businesses to reconnect with culture. It’s a place where wellbeing and work-life balance is prioritised.
